City of Lights

City of Lights - Paris, FR

What an amazing view! With a little research and advice, I found the perfect vantage point for watching (and photographing) the Parisian sunset. I had two opportunities to go to this location, and I didn’t want to take a chance of missing something good. I’m glad I did, because the 2nd night in Paris was perfectly cloudless. There was absolutely nothing interesting about the sky.

There were challenges, though. The rooftop of this building was closed, so I had to photograph the cityscape through a fairly dirty window as well as dealing with reflections from the indoor lights and the crowds trying to push up to the windows. It was all worth the effort.

When you drive through the overcast mountain pass that this scene presents itself to you, you stop at all costs and soak it in. Then you gather your senses and grab your camera gear. This was such a grand vista to begin with and the beams of light bursting through the heavy cloud cover took it to another level. My mentor and I just stood there gazing out at the sight. We started shooting with the hope it would translate to pictures.
